our history
ESTABLISHED IN 2011 AS LIKONI WARRIORS, RUGBY GEM IS ONE OF THE FIRST AGE GRADE RUGBY ACADEMIES IN KENYA
Early morning, December 2011. One Sunday in the Coastal town of Mombasa once you cross the ferry to Likoni, at a place called Ujamaa. Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK Ujamaa. Sat at the back in Church, a young man just in his 30 went out to get some fresh air where he saw young boys and girls playing and making lots of noise while the main service was on. Apparently their teacher was absent on that day. Normally they were to be in class. He marshalled the little ones to get into the classroom and kept them busy with song and memory verses as they bought time before the main service was over. After the service, he rushed to his house, picked an old Rugby ball he had and got back to church. Started passing the ball. It became a habit every Sunday after church service and that was the birth of Likoni Warriors Rugby Academy.
To create freedom and inclusion of other Religions, we moved to an open community ground thus opened doors for Muslims and non Christians.
Relocating to Nanyuki in 2014, Gem replicated the same in Nanyuki under Nanyuki Jackals and this time taught children from the community and orphanages.
In 2016, the brand RUGBY GEM was born as an umbrella that covered Likoni Warriors, now rebranded Likoni Community as well as Nanyuki Jackals, Toto Afrika and Miritini Sailors all from the Coast.
Years later here we are. Boys and Girls from less fortunate homes and orphanages getting to school through rugby, getting exposure and building their self esteem. They are now winning all over and they are feared and respected for their skill level and discipline. And through friends in British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) and the The Rugby Foundation TRF) they get to travel all over Kenya and East Africa.
